SDCC - 35 Years Later

I recently posted about the upcoming 2008 SDCC - San Diego Comic Con International projected to be a 'SELL-OUT' even before the doors open next July 24th 2008!

Here were my thoughts about the early beginnings of the SDCC from a feature I wrote a few years back:

"Yesterday my youngest son and I stopped at a LCBS, (Local Comic Book Store), in San Diego to check out back issues of Spider-Man comics for him to read, (his favorite super-hero), and whatever I could find for me .

The retailer had put several comics and comic book related items up for sale as he was doing his New Year clearance of items that hadn't sold the year before.

I was pleased to find several of the SDCC (San Diego Comic Con International) Program Books from previous years up for sale, as I had missed a few years of the Con while working in the Los Angeles area and out of active comic books collecting.

The 1984 Program Book had an article titled:
The San Diego Comic-Con: A Brief History.

It brought back to me several very good memories, of which I am sharing a few in this blog post.

The initial mini-con was a one day affair held March 1970 to raise funds for the upcoming 3-day con.
I did not know of this mini-con and thus did not attend.

The first true SDCC, then called the Golden State Comic-Con was held August 1st-3rd 1970 at the U.S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego.
I heard about this very late from a co-worker who knew I was into comics, and was able to attend on the last day, late in the day, after leaving work early. My memories of this are not totally clear, it was my first realization that there were comics fans like me in the San Diego area. Total approximate account of attendees was 300, yes only 300 !

I had just graduated from High School a few months earlier, was still living at home, and was working full time at the San Diego Zoo for college money, as I was going to be attending college after the summer.

The second SDCC, still called the Golden state Comic-Con, was held in 1971 at Muir College, UCSD Campus in San Diego. I was still working at the Zoo, had completed my first year at college, and either did not hear about the Con, or was too busy working. Additionally 'North' San Diego area where UCSD was not in my normal area of traveling to. I had a more 'provincial' attitude in those days. Heck, North San Diego was considered a long way off from the South Bay where I lived, even though gas was like 25 cents a gallon??? Attendance at the 2nd Con was approximately 800 persons.

The 3rd San Diego's West Coast Comic-Con, (renamed), was held August 18-20th, 1972 at the El Cortez Hotel, (it was a Hotel in those days, not the Condos it is today). I came there the last day of the Con, bought out a dealer's complete stock as he wanted to leave early and sold comics from the table he had been selling from! It was a little impromptu, but I had the cash, and was a business major student in college, so somehow I entered into my first commercial enterprise! And I made a lot of money that day, plus had plenty of comics left over!!

Well I wasn't going to let the 1973 SDCC, now named the San Diego Comic-Con, come and go without me! This time I had the days off of work, yes still at the San Diego Zoo, and I was set up as a dealer for all three days at the Sheraton Hotel, Harbor Island, in San Diego. I ran across the original check for the dealer table not too long ago, it is amazing what I paid then for 3 days versus what dealers paid for a booth last year at the San Diego Comic-Con International! Of course its' been 33 years since the photo above!

I set up alone at the SDCC that year in 1973, see picture above, and had the foresight to have my picture taken. Yes, that's me, 33 years ago, a young kid at having turned just 2l years of age the month before.

I was wearing a short-hair wig at the SD Zoo, because the big boss kept coming around us guys to get our haircut all the time, so we opted to wear short haired wigs and really let our hair grow..... and I had moved out of my parents' house, so I could have the length of hair I wanted to have. I have a lot less hair nowadays, and my mustache is a lot lighter in color, as well as my beard! Plus I have never been that skinny since my first marriage in 1975.... too much pasta since then!!

The guy to my left is another dealer, one of a couple of brothers who set up by me, and the comics on the table in front of me were just part of my stock, mostly Marvel comic books, with Captain Marvel, Amazing Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, Tales of Suspense, and Daredevil pictured. I had almost complete collections of all the Marvel Comics printed by 1973, and these were my duplicates for sale.

I don't believe short boxes for comics had been invented by then...I do remember buying comic bags from Robert Bell to insert the comics into for protection. (I still buy collections that have these old Robert Bell bags from the 1970's!!) I remember doing well selling at this con, even though only approximately 1100 were in attendance! Since I was alone in this commerical venture, I was not able to break away from the table to see the comics pros that came that year. It was the first SDCC to attract real professional interest from the New York Pros. Guests that year were Neal Adams, Carmine Infantino, Sol Harrison, June foray, Ray Bradbury, A. E. Van Vogt, Jack Kirby and others.

Looking back now at this photo from 1973, and at the 1984 SDCC Program Book that tells about the first 15 years of the SDCC, I am pleased that I did jump into selling at the earliest Comic Cons held out here on the West Coast!

It was a much simpler time, and so much fun!

Today, the SDCC International is up to 100,000 attendees and takes up both wings of the SD Convention Center.... and it is a Real Zoo to attend! (Pun intended!)

So to end this, I sign off with phrases from the 1970's.... Make Mine Marvel! ..... Excelsior !"

Buffalo Bill Jr.

Starring Dick Jones!

This TV Show aired from March 1, 1955 to Sept 21, 1956.

The show starred Dick Jones as a young Texas marshall who was trying to raise his kid sister, Calamity, played by Nancy Gilbert.

They both were under the watchful eye of their adoptive father, Judge Ben Wiley (Harry Cheshire).

Buffalo Bill Jr's Horse's name was 'Chief'!

This TV Western was aimed for a younger audience, unlike 'adult westerns' like Maverick, etc.

There were 52 black and white episodes that were produced by Gene Autry's Flying A Productions.

I don't really remember this TV Show, although ABC re-aired several episodes later in 1964 on their Saturday Morning Schedule.

Friday Night Time For Next Great American Band!

If You Missed LastWeek's Episode
Here Is 'Our Take' On
'The Next Great American Band'
TV Show on the Fox Network!
The 11-16-07 Episode

For those of you that missed this 11-16-07 show... The episode stayed with the new 1 hour format.
Each band called to perform did a cover of a song by the 'Leiber & Stoller' song writing team. That's Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller ! There were no original songs by the bands tonight as was the case in most of the earlier shows.

This blog post is similar to our format on 'Our Take' Of American Idol Performance Shows that we do when AI is in season.

The following is 'Our Take' on the Night's Performances in Numerical Grading.  You can see by the 'spread' that there is a difference of opinion between us on several of  the performances:

For those that missed our previous blog post on this TV Show:   HERE IS THE LINK For The 11-09-07 Episode!

Due to space limitations because of seven bands performing, the following are just a few notes from this nite:

When it got down to which of the final two bands would play for the night.... Tina thought for sure that 'Franklin Bridge' would play instead of 'Tres Bien'. Even 'Tres Bien' thought that in the 'Green Room'!
Instead it was 'Franklin Bridge' that wouldn't play and be out of the contest... Tina was dismayed but voiced that their type of audience probably wouldn't be watching this show on a Friday night and vote within the two hour voting period...
Sheila E who had predicted that 'Franklin Bridge' would make it to the end of the show was shocked that they were out.
Personally, I like the retro style of 'Tres Bien' better between the two of these bands...
Next week:  The Band with the lowest vote count won't play next week.... So No 'Results Show' like American Idol.
Next week the performances are covers on Mick Jagger & Keith Richards Songs!

Glad something is finally on Friday Nights for us! What's your thoughts on this show? Just post your comments below!

For those that are wondering what the 'tie-in' is for us... we have Rock Comic Books and Magazines for sale in our eBay Featured Store!

Whom Am I Thankful For?

Part IV

Yesterday was the time of year that many Americans stopped, reflected and gave thanks...

I was no exception to this as Tina and I got ready to go to my folks for Thanksgiving Dinner.

I am thankful for many things during my life, which is why this is but Part IV, but one of the earliest things I can remember from my childhood was our black and white TV set where I saw several TV Shows including one of my folks' favorites, 'Walt Disney'.

I definitely can remember those early years of watching Fess Parker as 'Davy Crockett' and made sure I would re-watch them when they were repeated years later!

Tina and I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Fess Parker a few years ago at his Hotel/Restaurant in Los Olivos, California.

We had visited his Fess Parker Winery, his Hotel/Spa in Los Olivos, and had a great dinner in his restaurant while visiting 'Wine Country' in the Santa Inez Valley.

I appreciated finally meeting the man who had given me so many years of entertainment and was a good role model for me while growing up!

Colt .45

Starring Wayde Preston!

Was a TV Show Series that ran from 1957 to 1960 on ABC.

Wayde Preston guest starred on one of the highest rated episodes of the popular TV Western Show 'Maverick' and thus gained the attention of the producer William T Orr.

Wayde went on to star in the first season before having a falling out with the studio during the second season. He returned for the final episodes of the TV Show just before it was cancelled.

Wayde played 'Christopher Colt', an undercover government agent, who had the secret identity of a traveling (Colt) pistols salesman. Thus the 'double entendre' of Colt in the series.

My interest in this show is mainly because of the cool comic book photo covers that Dell Comics ran as a tie-in. For some reason this was a show I don't remember watching much...
