Photos: (Above) I had the pleasure of seeing Julie (Catwoman) Newmar again... This time at the recent 2011 Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con! She was pleased to see 'my' new book, and asked me how times she was mentioned in it!  LOL!  She also mentioned to me that her new book was coming out shortly, AND that all of us should buy a copy! Which I will mention here when it is published!  BTW, you can click on the photo and be taken to the Facebook Fan Page where, after clicking the 'LIKE' button, you will be able to click on the link to read / download the second free report!  What is this second free report all about?  Well, read on citizen!

(Above top left) Michael at the same Anaheim Comic Con, but this time with the Batmobile while holding 'his' book with it. Yeah, I travel everywhere with my authors' copy!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3455:

I've mentioned before in this Blog, that I have a few pages going on at Facebook!

As well as being an 'admin' at several Fan Pages for Tina's and / or my clients, I also have a Facebook profile, group, and fan page!

That's because I maxed out my 'personal' profile page with over 5,000 Facebook Friends Plus others Fan Pages being 'Liked' back in early 2009.

So, because having a 'fan page' for myself sounded somewhat 'vain' at the time, I instead joined with the Facebook Comic Con (FBCC) folks, and started a Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing group page, that is affiliated with the FBCC folks.  The 'Make It So Marketing' is the name of Tina's business.

However, I could see before the recent change on groups / group pages at Facebook, that I also needed another page, due to maxing out my 'profile' page with the 5,000 imposed limit.

So I finally decided that it wouldn't be that 'vain' to start up a 'fan page' about what I am most involved in nowadays, and took the plunge!  Which ended up with the 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics' Facebook Fan Page, which I have been promoting a little more, what with the changes at Facebook with the group pages.

Well, last week I woke up at 1 AM with the solution to one of Tina's clients questions on how to present a 'free chapter' of their new book, as a 'gift' to 'fans' of their own author fan page at Facebook.

Here's the link to the rest of the story from the earlier blog, where I tested oout the 'Free Report' app, which has actually gone over pretty well so far to date!

So, I've talked with my Editor on the book that I submitted an essay to a while back, that was published at the end of 2010.

That book was titled 'Gotham City 14 Miles'.  Each one of the 'Milemarkers' stood for one 'essay' submitted by a different author.  So there were 14 of us in total!

So, my Editor, Jim Beard, said it would be okay to give away the first three pages from that book, which is very similar to what I did for Tina's client.

PLUS:  Today, July 6th of 2011, is the 66th Birthday of Bert Ward!   Bert is seen sitting next to Julie Newmar at the same 2011 Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con that Julie was pictured holding the book at the top of this blog post.  They were both there for the 45th Anniversary of the Batman TV show!

So lucky you, we all get to share a gift for Bert's birthday, (wink!), which is actually my 'Free Report #2', just for clicking the 'LIKE' button on my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics!

So while 'technically' not a 'Report', it is still 'Free' and an 'Intro' to the book that contains my chapter. If you are a fan of the 1966 Batman TV Show Series... Than consider this an introduction to re-acquaint you with the series.

If you aren't that familar with the TV series, then realize that this book is not just 'fanboys' writing and salivating over the TV show.  Instead the majority of the 14 essayists included what they liked and didn't like about the show in their essays.

So I wanted to bring this to the attention of this blog's readers! Especially since the book is still not available brand new from Amazon, where usually some pages would be excerpted to show the potential buyer what the book is about.

If you would like to see the excerpt from my essay in the book, all you have to do is to click this link, Michael D Hamersky On Comics, and then click the 'LIKE' button there!

You'll notice that the photo you see when you first arrive at that page will change to another photo after you click the 'LIKE' button... And just above that is a blue arrow which guides you to the blueish colored link.  Clicking that blueish colored link will open up either a new window  or tab, depending on the browser you are using, where a .pdf copy of the 'report' will appear. You are then encouraged to read and even print a copy of that report for yourself.

Of course, the whole idea for presenting this 'Free Report' is to give you the opportunity to see what at least one essay of the fourteen essays looks like. If you find the excerpt to be to your reading satisfaction, you are encouraged to buy a full copy from the publisher's web site, which I'll mention below soon!

Again, this is the just the second of a series of 'free reports' that I'll be giving away in the future at my own fan page, as a 'Thank You' to those of you that click the 'LIKE' button on my Facebook Fan Page!

And as a final note... If YOU already have 'LIKED' that Facebook Fan Page of mine, you don't need to 'unlike' it to get the 'free report'.  All you have to do is go to that 'Welcome & Free Report' link at the left side of the Fan Page, and after clicking that link, you'll see a new page which has the same blueish colored link to click on.  Just follow the easy direction there!

~Michael D Hamersky

P.S.  I did say that you could purchase a full copy of the book at the publisher's web site.  That web site is Lulu.com and here is the direct link to where you can purchase the book itself

Photos: Above:  The promotional comic book for the Super 8 film!  Yes, it's a 'retro comic book cover' and presented as one that could have been printed by DC Comics in 1960!  Top Left Photo:  One of the film posters for the movie!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3454:

Every 4th of July Tina and I usually go to one of the local theaters to catch a film, and one not necessarily a 'comic book movie' that we usually would blog about here!

We also usually have a home project that we will finish first, before getting cleaned up to go out...

However, this year we will be going to our church's BBQ at 1PM and then instead of seeing the film they are presenting afterwards... We will be going to see 'Super 8'.

Yeah, I didn't think it was a 'comic book movie' either, but I knew that Tina wanted to see it, especially on the 'BIG SCREEN', as the previews we saw in the theater before made it look like one that needed to be seen on the BIG SCREEN!  Plus Tina had seen a panel at the 2010 SDCC that mentioned the film...!

So, I was looking to see what times it played today, and ran across the fact that there is a 'comic book connection' to this film!

No kidding! Just like the movie that Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow was in back in 2004, 'Sky Captain And The World of Tomorrow'! There was a promo comic book for that also, but we saw the film and read the promo comic book before I started blogging in 2006!   However, I have mentioned that movie and promo comic book several times in the past as seen by this link!

Okay... I believe that I'm just going to post a few items on this film we are going to see later today, from others, and then come back and just give it a 'comic book grade', along with Tina, without going into a full blown review as it isn't really a 'comic book' movie! My intent is to format this blog post now, watch the film after the BBQ, and then get Tina's reaction / comic book grade on the way home, remember mine, and then post it for Tuesday, July 5th!

So what's this movie about?  Here's just part of what I found at Wikipedia.org for it:

"Super 8 is a 2011 American science fiction film written and directed by J. J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. The film stars Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, and Kyle Chandler and was released on June 10, 2011[3][4] in conventional and IMAX theaters. The film tells the story of a group of children who are filming their own Super 8 movie when a train derails, releasing a dangerous presence into their town."  For more you can click this link, but, SPOILER WARNING!!! It goes very deeply into the whole film!  So If you don't want to know, don't read too far into the page!!

Here's what the DC promotional Comic Book is about:

SUPER 8 #1
Written by J.J. ABRAMS, DAVID BARONOFF and PETER J. TOMASI
Art by TOMMY LEE EDWARDS and JOHN PAUL LEON
Cover by ALEX ROSS
In 1957, the Soviet Union made contact with an alien life form in the Earth's atmosphere... and shortly thereafter the United States nuked it from the sky! The chain of events that followed is what leads into to J. J. Abrams' new blockbuster, Super 8! Hitting theaters June 10th
10 pages FC • 12+

And LUCKY YOU... Here's the link to read it online for FREE! (At least at the time of this posting!).

Now, it's time to put this blog post on 'hold' until we get back from seeing the film...  I'll be back with Tina's comic book grade and a quick paragraph from her, plus my comic book grade plus a sentence or two...!

----------------

We're back... We stayed out later than we thought we would... And now it's Tuesday morning!

First, here's Tina's comments that she told me last night on the way home, with her comic book grade:

Good action sequences!

Good use of monster!

Good use of the kids in the story!

This is a 9.0 out of a 10.0 comic book grading scale, a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM)!

On the promo comic book... Tina thought that she shouldn't read it before going to the film, as she hates spoilers... But she read it and enjoyed what it presented.  Plus figured that it would not affect her watching the film itself. No grade was expressed on that promotional item.

Here's my thoughts:

This movie, set in the late 1970s, is like a 1950s movie updated for the 2010s!

Yes, it was a movie that Tina first marked down as wanting to see, way back at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con International, when she first heard the mention of it during the panel.  But for her it was worth the wait!

As for myself, once I found there was a 'comic book connection', as shown at the top right of this blog, it got me off the fence to go see it!

I give this film a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!

As for the promotional comic book, even though I only saw it online, and did not hold it in my hands like I normally read comics... I give that promo item a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 grade.  If you were lucky enough to obtain one... Keep it!

This was a great way to spend part of our 4th of July holiday!

Both Tina & I believe this movie is worth taking in... Especially at a BIG SCREEN near You!   Don't wait for the release of the DVD because there are many scenes that should be seen on the BIG SCREEN!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3453:

Quite honestly, I skipped posting a blog like this in 2010...

That's because I just haven't found that many comic book covers that celebrated the 4th of July on the front covers over the years that comic books have been published!

I've posted some blogs on the 4th of July, like this blog from 2009, when I found a great photo of Paul Kupperberg that just had to be re-posted here in my blog!  Thanks again, Paul for the use of your photo!

It just seems that the 4th of July just hasn't been one that has been celebrated that widely on comic book covers over the years, unlike other special days like Christmas, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, etc., etc.

But I wanted to take the time out this morning to thank those Founding Fathers of our Country to start what has been the greatest experiment in government ever, our Republic!

 Happy 4th of July!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3452:

(Vinnie) Last night, my dad and I picked up the movie 'Megamind' from Redbox, and watched it with my step-mom, Tina.

Dad and I were scanning through the lists at our local RedBox kiosk, and thought that this would be good for all of us to see together.

Tina had seen the previews of it at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con International, (aka SDCC), which had been shown to those attending in the Hall 'H'. It was shown in 3D with 3-D glasses being distributed to the attendees. She thought that the 3D made it feel like you really were in the city when Metro Man was flying about.  You can see Tina's thoughts on the SDCC panel at this link, Blog #3209 from August 10th of 2010.

I personally feel that the story had a nice twist which kept this from being another boring story of good versus evil. The characters had great chemistry, and the voices of them were perfect for their roles. It was also funny that Metro Man didn't actually die; it was faked. He just wanted to follow his dreams of music and wanted to become Music Man, to keep his initials of course!

The music fit in well with the movie. They were all songs relating to being bad including: 'Bad to the Bone', 'Highway to Hell', and Michael Jackson's 'Bad'. It was quite funny due to the timing of which the songs were played.

I found it interesting that the producers of the film kept alluding to the story of Superman from DC Comics. Kind of like how 'The Incredibles' seemed to be really simillar to the Fantastic Four from Marvel Comics...!

We all enjoyed the movie, but ended up with different comic book ratings!

Tina gave it an 8.0 / VF, and my dad gave it a 9.0 / VF/NM, due to the comic book mythos alluding to Superman and other heroes.

I give 'Megamind' a 9.2, NM-, due to the great voicing, great characters and roles, and great overall presentation.

This would make a really good family viewing DVD to watch!

~Vinnie!

Note from Vinnie's dad:  Vinnie makes it to as many comic cons with me as he can. He collects the 'Amazing Spider-Man' comic book series, but is open to read other titles from publishers that print titles that are age appropriate for him.  He also has been attending 'behind the scenes' events, such as the one he blogged about ht here: Vinnie's Special 'Look at The Captain Rochester Party for the Artists' at the recent 2010 Comic-Con International: San Diego! He really had fun meeting and having dinner with Sergio Aragones, Bob Burden, Scott Shaw! and others there at this exclusive after hours Comic-Con Party in San Diego!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3451:

I had the pleasure of meeting Barbara Marker last year at the Comic-Con International, (aka San Diego Comic Con), in Artists Alley.

At the time, I didn't know she was the wife of Paul Tallerday, who I've met elsewhere in San Diego!  I did know his wife was an artist, and her first name was Barbara, but I didn't make the connection at the time!

So, just a week ago, Paul contacted me and asked if I could help him get Barbara online at Facebook with a Facebook Fan Page.

Since that is something that I do for Tina's and my clients, I gladly accepted as I knew that Paul had been involved in the comics industry for several years, and that Barbara had been also.

Not knowing how involved she was, I had to check out her bio and comics credits, which I am presenting here as part of the 'Spotlight' processs:

"I was born in Garmisch Parten-Kirchen, in the Bavarian Alps of Germany. I came to the United States at 3 years old. I have been a Pacific Beach resident since he early '70s and have done most of my artwork there. My earliest dream as a child was to become an artist. It was my main interest in my early schooling. I won an art scholarship at the Chautauqua Art Colony in upstate New York. After that I studied art at Elmira College in New York. My next place to study art was at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.

Then at City College in San Diego, CA and for several years at the San Diego Academy of Fine Art. I kept up with my art and finally in 1981 got the opportunity to work as a comic book artist. I was hired to color cover art but sometines I did the entire process, the drawing , inking and color. Mostly, I enjoyed doing the covers since they have a strong impact. I worked for 12 years for Pacific Comics, Blackthorne Publishing, DC Comics, Eclipse Comics, and Dark Horse Comics.

I was also doing my own work. I have always loved animals, to capture their expressions and show how beautiful they are. I began an association with local Hallmark stores and sold prints of animals and fantasy drawings.

I've done many commissioned art projects; animal portraits, people portraits, fantasy art and paintings of people's homes and the San Diego skyline. I've had multiple one woman shows at the La Jolla library, the Tierrasanta library and the Benjamin Branch library. Since 2000, I've been invited to be in "Artist Alley" at the San Diego Comic Convention. There is a "YouTube" interview done at Comic-Con."
