TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3526:

I'm getting ready to set up the 3rd Annual 'Black Friday' Event via my Facebook Fan Page, 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics'.

This year I'm adding the words 'Cyber Monday' to the event as well, thus extending the event's time schedule from the day after Thanksgiving, through the weekend, and into the end of Monday night, which is known as 'Cyber Monday'.

One of the items that I will be listing as a prize is a signed copy of 'Gotham City 14 Miles' that was edited by Jim Beard and included 14 different essays by 14 different essayists, including myself, which is why I am signing it!

I just wanted to mention that you don't have to wait to possibly win a copy of the book from my upcoming event... As Amazon is now stocking new copies of the book at their web site!   Which is a recent development, as previously only a couple of used copies were showing up on it.

So... Here's the link to purchase the book:     Gotham City 14 Miles: 14 Essays on Why the 1960s Batman TV Series Matters!

For those of you don't know about the book yet, or what it is about... Here is a link to my Facebook Fan Page, which after you click the 'LIKE' button on the Welcome Page, you will be shown a link to download a .pdf sample of the first few pages of my own essay!

And I did mention there were 14 essaysists, right?

Well the additional essayists with the title of their essay include:

Mile Marker No. 1: “Bats in Their Belfries — The Proliferation of ‘Batmania’” by Robert Greenberger. Covers the genesis of the show and the explosion of Batmania.

Mile Marker No. 2: “Batman — From Comics Page to TV Screen” by Peter Sanderson. Delves deep into “Batman’s” comic book roots.

Mile Marker No. 3: “Such a Character — A Dissection and Examination of Two Sub-Species of Chiroptera homo sapiens” by Jim Beard.

Mile Marker No. 4: “Notes on Bat-Camp” by Tim Callahan. An effort to answer that age-old question: “Was ‘Batman’ truly camp?”

Mile Marker No. 5: “Aunt Harriet’s Film Decency League” by Becky Beard.

Mile Marker No. 6: “POW! – Batman’s Visual Punch” by Bill Walko. Looks into the impact of the show’s vibrant visual design.

Mile Marker No. 7: “Known Super-Criminals Still at Large” by Chuck Dixon. Compares and contrasts TV versions with comic book portrayals.

Mile Marker No. 8: “May I Have This Batdance?” by Michael S. Miller.

Mile Marker No. 9: “The Best Dressed Women in Gotham City” by Jennifer K. Stuller. Presents a compelling argument for its female denizens and their place in “Batman.”

Mile Marker No. 10: “Holy Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor!” by Michael D Hamersky. Addresses the topic of youth culture as presented in “Batman.”

Mile Marker No. 11: “Gotham City R&D” by Michael Johnson.

Mile Marker No. 12: “Theatre of the Absurd – ‘Batman: The Movie, 1966’” by Rob Weiner. Rolls film on the 1966 feature film.

Mile Marker No. 13: “Jumping the Bat-Shark” by William Patrick Murray. Delves into the third season of “Batman.”

Mile Marker No. 14: “Some Days You Just Can’t Get Rid of a Bomb” by Paul Kupperberg. The legacy beyond its original broadcast.

Afterword by Jeff Rovin, co-author of Adam West’s “Back to the Batcave,” offers a few personal anecdotes about the show and working with West.

Episode Guide by Joe Berenato. A rundown of episodes, with airdates and fun facts.

Not just judging the book by its cover... But by the content titles listed above and well known authors... You know this has to be a book that every fan of the 1966 Batman TV Show would enjoy reading!

So it is definitely one I would include on a Holiday Season Gift Giving Season List!   And now, it is even easier for you to order a copy online... At Amazon, as seen here:    Gotham City 14 Miles: 14 Essays on Why the 1960s Batman TV Series Matters!

Oh... And feel free to go ahead now, and click the 'Attending' link at my upcoming '3rd Annual Black Friday - Cyber Monday From Michael D Hamersky On Comics' event link.   Doing that, and also clicking the 'LIKE' button on my Facebook Fan Page, makes you eligible to win a signed copy of this book!  Sorry, just my signature will be on this copy, as I haven't seen all 14 of the essayists in one place to do an enmasse book signing yet. Now that would be something!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3525:

(Vinnie)  Hello, today I am guest blogging about the young adult fiction book, "Reverence Vol. I". It is a story about a young woman who uses her newfound powers to take reverence on her parents' killers.

It is a short book, just 87 pages in length. It is the first volume... So what's it about?

[SPOILER WARNING]

It starts when the main character was a kid, and her father, one who owned the neighborhood they lived in, started going into drug dealing and drinking his sorrows away. The men later killed him and his wife, while the daughter, Allessandra, and her brother, Nico, were both in school. At the time, she was only a child, just 10 years of age, and her brother was even younger. Their grandmother took them in, and while Nico could forget about the pain and anger, Allessandra could not. She went down the same path her father did, but at a much earlier age. She hung out with the wrong crowd, doing things just to fit in. She started getting tattoos, first because it was the only thing that let her emotions and pain leak out.

Allessandra started training in martial arts, where she found her first true friend, Michi. However, his father said they must not hang out any longer, and he must take on the family business. This made her have more pain, as she not only lost her parents, but that one friend she could always count on. She was now a bit older, and started getting tattoos for a real cause. Each year on the anniversary of her parent's death, she would get a tattoo commemorating them.

She began to be more respectful to her grandmother, and took her request of this year being the last year of getting the tattoos. So she agreed, and went to her favorite inking artist, who had done her previous tattoos. His name was Skeet, a man who took pride in his work. Her final tattoo was a big project, and it spanned over several days. It was a mighty phoenix, who could be reborn from its ashes. She took it to being her own "rebirth". That night, Skeet finished it, and moments later, several thugs came bursting through the front door firing on all of the occupants in the room. Skeet was shot, and fell to the ground. Allessandra felt a stinging pain in her leg, arm, and back. The table she was laying on to get the tattoo collapsed, and she fell into a puddle of ink and blood. Then, the electrical tattoo gun fell in with a burst of combustion and bright light.

Allessandra blacked out, and woke up in a hospital bed, with Nico and her grandmother at her side. She later went home, despite her doctor's wishes. When she got home, she kept hearing a hissing sound. She also noticed her tattoos were 3D, like there was added depth to them. She thought she was going crazy when the shurikens on her arms began to spin. She cleared her eyes and she still found them spinning. She concentrated, and shot one at her wall. It was definitely real. She also noticed they were rapid reload.

She decided to use these powers to take reverence on her parent's murderers. She took off that night to find an old friend from school who was part of the dark side in the town, where parties and such happened at night. She used her to get in to one. She noticed the same men were there, their names were Vic and Lu. She kept her eyes on them, and noticed they went into a back library.

Allessandra then found a guy, Stu, who obviously didnt get any of the women, and used him to get her into the back room.  He apparently knew the men well. She had to lose him, and told him to fetch her a drink. He did so, and she went in to talk to them. She asked who their boss was, but they wouldn't budge. She threatened them, and they pulled their guns out. Her cobra tattoo split out into two and wrapped around them. They finally told her that there was someone else that was closer to the boss than they were. They told her where to find him. She put a note with their signatures and their crimes and tossed them out the window into a garbage can, where a police man was waiting.

She then headed out where she found  Stu again, and asked him to get her into the room where the man Vic and Lu told her he was. As he was taking her there, her feet stopped. She didn't want to continue. Yet, she had to. She continued walking forward when the man said, "Allessandra, its me, Michi. Do you remember me?" She couldn't believe it. She continuously repeated "No, it can't be you!". And that, is where the first volume ends.

[END SPOILER WARNING]

Although probably intended for older "young adults", I quite liked it. The storyline was smooth, it displayed the characters and their personalities well, and made sense overall. It showed that Allessandra had a motive to use her powers, and that was to take reverence on her parent's killers. The artwork, while in black and white, and a bit "scratchy" was giving the book another sense to show that there was sadness and drearyness.

I really enjoyed this book, and I will definitely keep a lookout for volume two, which should be released sometime in Fall of this year. Although it is NOT a graphic novel, instead it is a novel with illustrations, I give this book a "comic book grade" of Very Fine / Near Mint, (VF/NM), a 9.0 out of 10.0 grade scale. You can purchase a copy of it here: Reverence: What Will You Seek? .

(Michael)  Thanks, Vinnie!

I appreciate your reading this Young Adult (YA) book that was mailed in to me after I met the author, Jeanie L.S. Galster,  who was at the 2011 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

I have gotten a little behind in reviewing items that were given to me at the most recent cons, and Vinnie always looks to see what is new that has come in the mail when he visits.

He expressed interest in reading this book, and the comic book that review blogged yesterday. I'm glad he enjoyed this book, although it is a little out of the normal 'niche' that this blog covers...!

Plus, here's the link to where you can order the book he just reviewed: Reverence: What Will You Seek?

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3524:

(Vinnie)  Hello, today I am guest blogging the promotional comic book "Dorothy of Oz" which is based on the upcoming movie. The idea of this specific publication came from Roger S. Baum, the great-grandson of the original writer of "The Wizard of Oz" L. Frank Baum.

Basically, the promoters want you to pick up this promo issue which could be considered "issue 0" or a "sneak peek" to the upcoming comic series, "Dorothy of Oz". It has been mentioned that five comics are being published, and then followed by the movie. The publisher is releasing the material issue by issue so it follows a specific order. The Dorothy of Oz movie leads from where the comics stop, and the comics lead from where the original Wizard of Oz story ends. So, essentially, it is a continuation of his great-grandfather's story.

As the movie is planned to come out in August of 2012, there is a slight wait. They therefore direct you to their Facebook Fan Page so you can see all the latest news and keep updated. They also direct you to the landing page of what will soon be a "virtual journey" into the "Adventure in Oz". It is stated to be a virtual world in which you can play games and learn about the characters. You can find their Facebook Fan Page at www.facebook.com/dorothyofozthemovie. You can also visit Adventure in Oz at www.adventureinoz.com.

Just an FYI to any hardcore Oz fans, that the 48th annual Winkie Con runs from July 27-29 of 2012 in Pacific Grove, CA. This will be a great con for any fans to find others with like interests or to find other "Oz-themed" publications to purchase and read. Also, considering this con is currently 47 years old, it is 5 years older than the famous San Diego Comic Con International, running for 42 years.  That is quite an accomplishment!

Well back to the promo comic... This promotional comic served its purpose wonderfully. It drew attention to the comic book series and upcoming movie, and told you where to go while you wait, and how to learn more. I'm just a casual Oz reader, but it definitely made me excited to wait for it. For this promotional comic book, "Dorothy of Oz", I give it a comic book grade of Very Fine / Near Mint, (VF/NM), a 9.0 out of 10.0 grade scale. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

~Vinnie!

(Michael)  Thanks, Vinnie!

I appreciate your reading this comic book that was presented to me at the 2011 Comic-Con International: San Diego as I walked past the IDW booth!

It does seem to be something that I would also like to read, and possibly check it out on DVD when the film is released in that format.

There is a growing interest in all thing OZ... And I was surprised to learn last year that Winkie Con actually existed and had been in existence that long!

Here's a link to Oz related comics that I have reviewed blog so far, for those that are interested in all things Oz!.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3523:

I've been so busy reading comics and graphic novels that were given to me at the 2011 Comic-Con International San Diego, and other events I've been to, that I have neglected to finish reading the 2011 Comic-Con International San Diego 2011 Souvenir Book.

Well... I remedied that this weekend, and realized that it was a book that I wanted to blog about, as there were several milestones featured in it.

I've already mentioned the 50th Anniversary of Comics Fandom, and blogged about it in blog #3468 with photos. In addition, I posted many of the photos not used in that blog at a special photo album at my Michael D Hamersky On Comics Facebook Fan Page.  The special feature on the same 50th Anniversary in this Souvenir Book is worth the time and effort to read it, even if you haven't been in Comics Fandom for 50 years! It is that good of an article!

I've also mentioned the 50th Anniversary of Fantastic Four #1 at blog #3483. In the feature article in this souvenir book, Mark Alexander presents a really nice story on  "Stan Lee & Jack Kirby: The Wonder Years".  Even though I lived during those years, it was great to revisit it from Mark's POV. Plus the art submitted by others to complement the article was very sharp in presentation style!

The 'Golden Age of Fanzines' feature is a gold mine of info and pics about those early days!  Definitely worth reading to catch up on past history if you are new to comics!  There wasn't an internet back then!

50 Years of 'Spy vs. Spy', which was a feature in MAD Magazine that I always enjoyed!   Sheesh!   50 Years now!   Peter Kuper does a fine job in covering this!

'1986: The Year Comics Grew Up' - which although is NOT one of my favorite periods, (too much grim n gritty since then for my tastes), it still is a watershed year and covered very well by Mark Lucas.

Other feature articles are presented in this special souvenir book, including: '25th Anniversary of Dark Horse Comics', '25th Anniversary of SLG Publishing', '20th Anniversary of the CBLDF', and '20th Anniversary of Bone', but I'm just commenting on the features that were of major interest to myself here in this review.

Returning features inlcuded seeing the 2011 Will Eisner Award Nominees, the 2010 Will Eisner Award Winners, Will Eisner Hall of Fame, the Inkpot Awards, and remembering those in the comics industry or fans of that have passed on since the last souvenir book.

My comic book grade for this year's Souvenir Book is a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale. My only semi-negative thought is that the 50th Anniversary of the Fantastic Four #1 would have been a more logical choice for the front cover due to the significance of that issue, instead of the JLA... But then again, it is the Editor's choice for cover feature placement.

Once again, this is a Comic-Con Souvenir Book that those interested in comics should not be without!  My thanks to those that were instrumental in publishing this, Gary Sassaman, Jackie Estrada, Fae Desmond, David Glanzer, and others.

If YOU didn't attend this year... I do have extra copies of the 2011 Souvenir Book listed for sale in my online local comic book shop!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3522:

I want to bring to your attention that the first ever COMIKAZE EXPO will be running November 5th thru 6th at the Los Angeles Convention Center!

As it is with any first time show, there will be many questions as to what the convention is about... What it is exhibiting... What Guests will be there... Who else is attending... etc., etc.

Well, I'm going to list the links that I think are important for you to check out, as the Expo isn't that many days away now!   Only four weekends away, actually!

First, as it is a new show on the convention circuit, I'm going to direct you to the Facebook Fan Page for the Comikaze Expo, where you should direct any questions directly to the con promoters!  They have been pretty good in responding so far to questions that are posted there...

The actual main web page for the Comikaze Expo is shown here.

The web page for Guests of Honor is here. Including Pop Culture guests: Stan Lee & Elvira as the headliners!

Featured Guests page shows that there are several Star Trek: Voyager stars will be there, including Robert Beltran, Jennifer Lein, and Tim Russ.  Plus Erin Gray of Buck Rogers of the 25th Century TV Show will be there!  Who else...?  Take a look at the link to see more!

Writers, Artists, and other Comic Book creators will be there as well, including Wes Huffor, George Chase, and several of the new DC 52 creators.

Interested in gaming tournaments?  Check out this link.

Okay... that's about it right now on upcoming features at this point in time when this blog is posted.

Again, I'm going to suggest that you 'Like' their Facebook Fan Page, to keep up with what else will be happening at this Expo. Which is easier to spot than on their web page.

As for tickets, you can purchase them right now at their ticket web page.

Tina and I are planning to be there both days, taking photos for my own Facebook Fan Page, and additional blog posts afterwards.

The special photo album at my own Facebook Fan Page has been set up here.

Since the Comikaze Expo is the first weekend of November, I suggest that you mark your calendars now, purchase your tickets online, and be set to attend, as first of the month events sometimes sneak up on us way too soon!

As I said above... Tina and I will be there... So we hope to see  YOU there also??!!
